Fashion Editorial For Contributor Magazine
I am very pleased to have photographed and published a fashion editorial for Contributor Magazine. I have looked at and admired the online magazine for a while.
I photographed this story both digitally and on film using a Holga 120N. The digital I use as a preview tool to figure out how I would like to shoot each look prior to committing to film. The Holga is a plastic toy medium format fillm camera. Even the lens is plastic. There are a lot of "defects" in the images it produces such as vignetting, light leaks, and soft focus. I have been shooting with this camera for some time and know how to work it to get the effects that I want. One technique I used on this shoot was "dragging the shutter". The camera has two shutter speed settings: 1/60 of a second and B (bulb). The B setting keeps the camera's shutter open for as long as the shutter release button is pressed down. The flash I use will freeze the subject and I will move the camera to achieve motion blur. The film added and element I would never be able to achieve using digital photography. I find the images haunting.
My stylist Sarah Medhat put together some really fun looks pulling pieces from showrooms as well as her own designs.
I love the hair by stylist Damian Monzillo and makeup artist Maiko Ando.
Model Vlada Roslyakova with agency W/360 absolutely got the concept and killed it. Her expressions and posing was spot on.
Above are two images from the editorial. You can see more by using this link to visit the magazine or visiting the "On Film" section of my website.
